Meghalaya sets up Education Commission

The Meghalaya government has established the State Education Commission. The commission will be chaired by SM Sungoh from the department of education at North Eastern Hill University (Nehu). David Reid Syiemlieh, former chairman of the UPSC, and Tony TC Marak, former executive chairman of the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education, have been appointed as advisers. Ambrose Ch. Marak from the education department will serve as the member secretary.

The commission’s term will be for two years and it will begin operations immediately. Its main role is to provide advice to the Meghalaya government on matters concerning the school and college system. This includes salary structures, school/college management, and accountability. The commission will also recommend specific solutions, strategic interventions, and policy decisions to bring about reforms in the education system. All recommendations will align with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020. Additionally, the commission will propose reforms and policy changes to enhance the quality of education in schools, colleges, and higher and technical education institutions.
